Garret Daines is a hard man to forget. Even his dog Boots tries to put the two together while cattle rustlers and her brother try to insure she isn't around to spoil their plans.

Stacey Kayne gives us one of those tales of the best and worst of the old west. Honorable men like Garret and the Morgans are the kind of people who helped a young nation survive while despicable men like Gideon and Nathan only worked for their own power. This is a well-constructed tale filled with the flavor of the wildness of Wyoming. We get to see the beauty of being a cowboy and rancher in an untamed land through Garret's eyes as Ms. Kayne builds this man into a rarity in any time period.

The relationship between him and the complex woman sometimes called Maggie, sometimes Grace, sometimes the endearment Magpie and sometimes Mad Maggie is powerful. Ms. Kayne presents well the fact that not everyone bases their relationships on what they see on the outside or what they can get out of them. The growth of Maggie's personality is a well done thing. Many readers may envy her the seclusion of the mountains!

I hated to put this book down. There's suspense throughout with the hardships and villains who'll stop at nothing to get what they want. The romance of Garret and Maggie is always fragile as the solitude of the mountains constantly calls to her. This is a great read, easy to get lost in as Ms. Kayne weaves this tale into one that won't let us go.

Mountain Wild tells the story of two people who find each other under unusual circumstances and wind up with a love that is unusual in its intensity. Stacey Kayne’s books just keep getting better and better. Don’t miss this one. Be sure and pick it up and be prepared for entertainment at its best.

"Garret Daines calls the wild and resilient Mad Mag of the mountains “My saving Grace”. She has always thought of him as her fair-haired Viking to be admired from afar. Theirs is a compelling story that surrounds the reader with a flood of emotions.

In the blink of an eye thirteen-year-old, Margaret Grace’s (Maggie’s) life is changed from being the much-loved, pampered daughter of a wealthy father to being a person on the run to save her life. With harsh lessons learned from Ira, a reclusive trapper, Maggie survives and becomes Mad Mag dressed in a stinky bearskin coat, hat pulled low over bushy black hair and a hostile attitude that sends most people scurrying away from her.

When she pulls the unconscious and wounded Garret Daines out from under a snowdrift, her world changes. Reluctantly, she hauls him and his dog Boots to her secret home in the mountains, knowing she is going against Ira’s teachings and making herself vulnerable.

Stacey Kayne creates a riveting story with descriptions that make the reader shiver in the snow, shudder at the sadistic cruelty, and sizzle with the love scenes.

Ira, the trapper that appears only once in the story is a major influence in the action. He taught Maggie to depend on no one but herself and to keep moving because she is a target standing still. Many other characters embody the best and the worst characteristics of humanity as they influence the lives of both Maggie and Garret.

Mountain Wild bustles with happenings we expect in a historical western but it also has startling twists that make the reader catch her breath and rush along reading to get Maggie and Garret out of precarious situations.

Stacey Kayne touches the senses and satisfies the heart with her poignant style and captivating characters. Recommended!"

I got a call today from the Bookseller's Best Award and MAVERICK WILD is a finalist for Best Short Historical of 2008! They have an Award ceremony at RWA National in July.

MAVERICK WILD was also up for a Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award for Best Historical KISS Hero. I was unable to attend the Romantic Times conference last month (pout) where Linda Lael Miller ended up taking home the RT KISS trophy. But hey, I was in the running with Linda Lael Miller (my idol!)----don't get much better than that! Cheers to Linda on the win.

THE GUNSLINGER'S UNTAMED BRIDE was honored by The Lori's 2008 Best Book award! Taking home the 1st place trophy for the Historical category, GUNSLINGER is also in the running for Overall Best Book of 2008 - the winner announced in June.

The cover for my June anthology has finally arrived!

The cover arrived in my in-box the same day as Pam’s Wedding Post, how’s that for timing?! I was already having wedding nostalgia, and this cover put me into total wedding cover bliss. I adore it!

Two wounded souls, Lily and Juniper, had both suffered at the hands of uncaring adults aFter they were orphaned at an early age. Each of them learned survival skills that served them well in their respective environments until fate threw them together.

My goodness, with both of them determined to control a volatile situation at Pine Ridge, action and passion make for breath-holding reading.

Stacey Kayne gives us vibrant, life-like characters who cope with what can’t be changed in their past (even though they can’t forget) as they strive to carve out a future. At times, she lets humor shine through like a bright ray of sunlight.

Reginald, Lily’s ‘sort-of’ cousin, is a darling and should have a story all his own. What a joy to have a friend like Regi.

THE GUNSLINGER’S UNTAMED BRIDE is a story of entangled lives so snared the possibility of working out the kinks and knots seems hopeless. But, Stacey Kayne does a superb job of finding the twists and turns and, with subtle maneuvering, untangles the mess so Juniper and Lily can start their happy-ever-after.

The contrast between the opulent offices of L.P. Carrington in San Francisco to the rough-and-tumble of the lumber camp at Pine Ridge is almost as sharp as the contrast between the hate and love seen in this compelling story. EXCITING READING!

Five Hearts from The Romance Studio!

Ms. Stacey Kayne has once again written a great book with great characters and lots of action and tension. She introduced her two main characters, Sheriff Juniper Barns and Lily Palmer Carrington, by establishing their pasts. Juniper had spent the last twenty years trying to live down his past. Lily had spent the same time planning his death. These two had strong, determined personalities. Ms. Kayne described them in such a way that it was as if I knew them personally.

There is humor woven throughout the book. There is suspense and sensuality. Of course, the hate relationship soon turned to something more. The supporting cast of characters was many and quite effectively penned. There was lots of action which kept the storyline flowing. This book was one which did not just follow the predictable lines. There were many surprise turns in the book.

I loved the book and highly recommend it to anyone who likes historical romances with happy endings—though not predictable. It is everything a good book should be.

FRESH FICTION Review!!

I admit it; I am an unabashed fan of Stacey Kayne. I loved her Maverick books and couldn't wait for this book to be published. True to her style this books characters are feisty, brave and yet not afraid to show their vulnerabilities. Even the most macho guy has a tender side and ladies don't always have to be gentle. This book takes us out of the range and into the lives of those working the early logging mills where living conditions were difficult and families grew in the shadows of the mills. Kayne doesn't take shortcuts with the solutions for these families. Instead she gives us a glimpse of what the future could hold with a little bit of hope and lots of gumption. Lily and June are sure to win a spot in your heart.

Romance Writer's of America ~ National Conference

This past week I've been in San Francisco at the RWA National Conference - this was the fifth conference I've attended and as always, it was an absolute blast. Wednesday night I signed books at the Literacy for Life signing. For a romance writers there is nothing quite like being in a hotel with 2000 other romance writers. I don't know that I'd call a writer's conference a "vacation", as you are running from function to function and meeting to meeting much of the time--I come home completely exhausted, yet fully energized about my craft. It is so great to see online friends from all over the world and to meet with agents and editors. I've posted a few pics of my highlights.

I love gearing up for conference and choosing my giveaways for the "Goody Room"--a room full of promotion material for authors to browse and choose from. Here's a pic of my display--I had a boot full of beaded bookmarks (Thanks Mom!!) as well as some hunky cowboy pins and postcards. My favorite goody was Carla Capshaw's little green pocket mirrors with her pretty tulip logo on them and the book DARK RIDER by Kathrynn Dennis. We met two years ago when her book was still yet-to-be-published and won the writing contest I was coordinating--so great to have a signed copy of her book!

The first event I attended was the tea party put on by my literary agency, BookEnds--that's literary agent Jessica Faust, our gracious hostess for the afternoon, smiling from across the pastry trivet. I wish I'd gotten a better picture of the tables. I felt like Alice in Wonderland sitting on a sofa at a high table laden with teapots of assorted teas and tasty pastries and tiny sandwiches. In the picture below I'm sitting with fellow BookEnds authors Christie Craig and Christine Wells.

This is a pic with my mom at the Harlequin party. It was great fun to have her and our cousin Diane along--though it seemed we saw little of each other as I was always on the run, not that they minded. With so may places to shop in San Francisco, they had a blast and took time out to attend the Harlequin Party with me :)

Next up, the Harlequin Historical Tea at the Taly Tara Tea House/Polo Shop. Loads of fun meeting with the other HH authors and our editors. This conference was my first chance to meet fellow P&P fillies in person.

Really good Western romances are hard to find, but Stacey Kayne aims and hits the bull's eye dead center with her latest release, THE GUNSLINGER'S UNTAMED BRIDE. The second book in her Bride series, this story also features many of the characters from that first title, BRIDE OF SHADOW CANYON, including Rachell, Jed and their children.

What really takes front and center here, though, are the characters and story of Lily and Juniper. Juniper was the 14 year-old boy who shot a man in self-defense and was taken in to be fostered by Rachell and Jed at the end of BRIDE OF SHADOW CANYON. Now a grown man, he's lived by the gun for so long that he always seems to be confronting his past. Trying to turn his life around by putting on a sheriff's badge, Juniper finds himself suddenly confronted by his new employer, Lily Carrington, a woman whose real reason for being there goes far beyond checking out the records of her newly acquired logging company.

Knowing exactly who Juniper is when she meets him—the man who shot and killed her father in cold blood—Lily is determined to not just get even, but to settle the score and avenge her father, once and for all. But sometimes things aren't all that they seem to be, and even as astute a businesswoman as Lily is, she hasn't thoroughly investigated the story of what really happened that day between this gunslinger and her father. When the payroll she's brought along goes missing and the tension begins to mount between employer and employees, Lily is forced to work alongside Juniper. Soon she realizes that the man she's demonized all these years is not quite the cold, calculating and hardened man she thought he'd be. As attraction grows between them and the air becomes taut with sexual tension, can Lily hold fast to her plans for revenge, or can she forgive this man she blames for taking away all that she once held dear?
Both Lily and Juniper are strong, resilient characters, both trying to find their footing after similar childhood trauma that eventually ended in opposite outcomes—Lily became orphaned and fostered with relatives who disapproved of her, while Juniper found a family who fostered and loved him as one of their own. Juniper would like nothing more than to settle down and raise a family, but his past seems to stand in the way. He hasn't yet learned that you can't expect others to forgive you unless you can learn to forgive yourself.

Lily, on the other hand, dwells on the family that was lost to her—a mother who died of illness and the perfect loving father—in her eyes—whose life was cut short by Juniper's bullet. What she believes happened that day versus what really did, are eventually eye openers for Lily, a woman who has spent her adult life focused on using her business acumen to amass her fortune with an "I'll show you" mentality. Just like Juniper, she needs to leave her past behind her and focus on what could be—the love that has eluded her, while letting go of her hatred and drive for vengeance and learning to forgive.

Stacey Kayne has a wonderful way with her prose, which is why I enjoy her work so much. Her stories are always fast-paced and engrossing, and her in depth characters and their situations believable. The setting of a logging camp in California is definitely out of the norm, and even her secondary characters—like Regi, Lily's spoiled and pampered cousin who's an absolute hoot—are likeable and interesting. Bottom line is, I know I'll read a great Western romance whenever I dive into one of her books.

With a hearty two-thumbs up from this reviewer, Stacey Kayne's THE GUNSLINGER'S UNTAMED BRIDE is one sure shot of a historical Western romance.

Lunch with the Red Hatters

With a red hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me.”

This past Thursday my mom-in-law invited me to be a guest at her Red Hat Society Luncheon. I was thrilled and honored, and my mom came along for the fun. That’s my mom Phyllis in the red shirt and my mom-in-law Kathy in the purple with red flowers. We’re holding the special purple and red cowboy boot cookies my mom-in-law made for the luncheon. It’s not often the three of us get out together and I always enjoy the company of my moms (double the fun!). I had a fabulous time taking a break from deadline mania and visiting with the Red Hat ladies.

I wanted to share some pictures (click on a picture to enlarge or save) from our lunch and some history on the Red Hat Society.

The Red Hat Society fondly refers to itself as a “dis-organization” with the aim of social interaction, and to encourage fun, silliness, creativity, and friendship in middle age and beyond. The Society is not a sorority or a voluntary service club. There are no initiations or fundraising projects.

The Red Hat Society (RHS) is a social organization founded in 1998 for women over 50. As of October 2006 there are about 1.5 million registered members in over forty thousand chapters in the United States and thirty other countries. A founder or leader of a local chapter is usually referred to as a “Queen”. Members are called “Red Hatters”. Members 50 and over wear red hats and purple attire to all functions. A woman under age fifty may also become a member, but she wears a pink hat and lavender attire to the Society’s events until reaching her fiftieth birthday.

I received an email from a reader asking if my books were available in e-book form. I tried to reply, but my email was bounced back by a firewall, so I figured I'd answer here :-)

YES! Harlequin is now making their books available in ebook form. MAVERICK WILD and THE GUNSLINGER'S UNTAMED BRIDE are both available as ebooks through eHarlequin and any other online bookseller.

Unfortunately they've only converted backlisted Harlequin Historicals to May 2007, and my first two books were printed in March and April of '07. No word yet on whether they will also be put into ebook form--I hope so!

Thanks to my health insurance and an untimely surgery, I'm taking it easy this holiday season. While this has put a lot of unexpected pressure on my hubby and two sons, I have to say, it's not easy being a patient! For someone used to putting all the final touches on everything, it's hard to ask for help with things that in most situations seem menial, and it takes a few days to rework the hardwire and allow others to take over. I got myself into trouble the first few days after surgery, doing more than I should, and it set me back in the healing process --lesson learned :)

So I'm taking it easy this Christmas, and letting my handsome elves to do the last minute holiday dashes and wrap gifts in their no-bow's-required, manly ways. Packages will look a little strange and our Christmas potlock contributions will be a crock of lil' smokeys *g*, but nevertheless, the holiday atmosphere is Merry & Bright :) How 'bout the rest of y'all? Are you free of the shopping masses yet? Have the gifts been wrapped, garland strung, cookies baked? Be sure to take time to kick back and enjoy the festivity!

MAVERICK WILD in time for the holidays!

Ten days to its New Year's release date, and Chance Morgan has already been spotted baring his hunky chest in bookstores across the states! My friend Anna in New Jersey spotted him while out holiday shopping.

MAVERICK is now available in online bookstores as well. I pre-ordered some books the day the pre-order link went up at Barnes & Noble...it's my third book and still a total thrill to see my name and cover up on those bookstore sites! To my holiday delight, the books arrived yesterday!

Anyone else spotted Chance making an early appearance --I'd love to hear about it if you have :)

FOUR-Book Deal!!!!

So, just over a week ago, I turned in the finishing touches on my fourth western and breathed a huge sigh of relief as I dropped into bed...deadline-free! I figured I'd take a little break before working up any new western proposals...sometime before Christmas maybe...*g* Well, I woke up six hours later to a message from my agent--my editors at Harlequin sent us an offer for FOUR MORE WESTERNS. =:-O

I was stunned, and excited to say the least. After some pleasant negotiations and working out deadlines that didn't give me chest pain *g* , we've accepted the offer :)

The first of the new four westerns will be my third Wild book - Garret's story, the final book in the Wild Trilogy.
Next is a Spring Bride Anthology, with Harlequin Historical authors Jillian Hart and Judith Stacy--release date, June '09. Right now, this short story is shaping up to be a continuation of my own Bride series.
The next two books will be full-length western historicals ~ that's about all I know at this point, but more cowboys is always a good thing ;-)

I am so excited about this book! It has become one of my favorites of all my manuscripts, packed full of action, danger and sizzling romance ;-)

Chance has never forgotten his vow, or the guilt he feels for never going home. But he has enough problems with his seductive, manipulative neighbor and trying to keep thieves away from the ranch. He doesn't need any more 'trouble', and Cora is trouble with a capital "T."

It's always nerve-wracking, waiting for that first review. I'm pleased, and am hoping readers will enjoy this warmhearted Western :)

"Join Stacey Kayne as she spins an exciting tale that takes place in the Wild West. The dust of the trail and the battle of the elements bring to life this story as a group of young people drive wild horses to Wyoming. Add to that the excitement of a gun toting killer and his posse out to stop them and the readers will be enthralled to the very end.

The excitement comes second only to the emotionally stirring storyline. Skylar is unlike any young woman one expects to find. She is as tough as nails on the outside and can out work any man. But on the inside she hides the female aspect of her character. This is a part of her that she has had to repress for fear of appearing weak. This character steals the heart of the reader as well as the men around her. The pain and fear she experiences is tangible and readers will find themselves hoping that everything turns out right for this spunky female.

Tucker has not had an easy life either. He is known for the trouble he finds as well as his big heart. These two characters are perfect for each other if they can just get past their stubborn natures. The sparks that fly between the two is only a prelude to the passion that is boiling right under the surface waiting for a chance to break free. When they are not arguing they are struggling to control their overwhelming desire. Readers will find themselves laughing out loud as these two try to work things out.

Mustang Wild is a beautiful romance filled with passion and excitement. It touches the hearts of the readers and will have them holding their breath through all the danger and excitement. For all these reasons I highly recommend this story to all the readers."

It's official, MAVERICK WILD will be released January 1st, 2008! A little later than I had anticipated, but I'm thrilled none the less. No cover yet, but here's a splash of MAVERICK inspiration that was sent to the art department.

I'm thinking January will be perfect for 2008 MAVERICK WILD pocket calenders. With advance copies, December will be full of MAVERICK holiday giveaways! After all the holiday hustle, hopefully readers will be ready to spend a little time with Chance and Cora Mae. While working on BRIDE OF VENGEANCE, I was telling my critique partner about my heroine's silver hot chocolate server. A San Francisco resident, Lily cannot go without her morning cup of Chocolate.

Helpful vixen that my CP is, she sent me a link for antique chocolate pots. And OMG! I am in love!

The silver chocolate pot is from 1852. The ceramic pots didn't gain popularity until the 1890's and early 1900's.

Now, I am not one for nicknacks--if it has to be dusted or watered, it's not for me, but I think I will have to make an exception!

When I end up writing just to support my chocolate pot fetish, I shall blame Sheila Raye ;-)

Beautiful Distractions

As a new author reviews can be a nerve-wracking distraction. I found one for BRIDE on the Historical Romance Writers review site which has tickled me ten shades of pink -- a distraction and a positive push as I dive back into VENGEANCE.

Here's the last paragraph of the review:

“A fast paced, highly enjoyable story of opposites attracting and overcoming the odds against them; BRIDE OF SHADOW CANYON is a fine example of the Western American genre. Rachell is a shy and less-than-domestic woman who knows what she wants and goes after it. She is stubborn and brave and strong in the face of adversity. Jed is a true American hero; a shadowy gunman who has lived on his own for so long, he has no idea what home and family mean; much less love and kindness. He is a man’s man; willing to protect the innocent at all costs, yet is afraid to believe in the power of love. I was greatly enamored of this couple and felt toward them like old friends; I cheered them on, I cursed the villains and I shed a few tears at the end.
